With the November 4, 2025 Special Election approaching, Desert Stonewall Democrats have announced their strong endorsement of California Proposition 50—a ballot measure aimed at temporarily overriding the state’s current congressional maps in response to nationwide partisan gerrymandering.
The measure, if approved, would replace the maps drawn by California’s independent redistricting commission with revised boundaries designed to ensure fair representation in the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections. According to Desert Stonewall Democrats, this action is necessary to counteract extreme redistricting tactics employed by Republican legislatures in states like Texas, which have created disproportionate advantages and undermined democratic equity.
A Stand for LGBTQ+ Rights and Electoral Fairness
The organization emphasized that Proposition 50 is not just about maps—it’s about protecting the rights of Californians, especially the LGBTQ+ community. In recent years, federal rollbacks have included the elimination of HIV prevention programs and the discontinuation of the National Suicide Hotline for LGBTQ+ youth. Desert Stonewall Democrats view Proposition 50 as a safeguard against further erosion of civil rights and a step toward restoring balance in congressional representation.
“The stakes are high,” the group stated. “Proposition 50 ensures that future elections are conducted on a level playing field—without an unfair advantage for Republicans.”
Broad Coalition of Support
The Yes on Proposition 50 coalition includes a powerful lineup of supporters: the Riverside County Democratic Party, President Barack Obama, Senator Alex Padilla, Senator Adam Schiff, and Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, among other prominent Democrats and Independents.
