Christopher Durangโs Beyond Therapy is an uproarious roller coaster of romantic dysfunction and therapy gone completely off the rails. If you enjoy sharp wit, eccentric characters, and the delightful chaos of human relationships, this play is a must-see.
The story centers on Bruce (Isaac Gaeta-Tollette) and Prudence (J. Clare Merritt) two lonely hearts attempting to navigate the treacherous world of dating with the “help” of their completely incompetent therapists. Bruce โemotionally expressive and perpetually optimistic โ declares, “I cry easily. I like that in a person. I think itโs good to cry.” While Prudence, ever skeptical, counters, “I don’t think it’s good to cry all the time. I think it’s good to be able to carry on.“ Their disastrously mismatched personalities set the stage for hilarity as their dates (and therapy sessions) spiral into delightful absurdity.
Adding fuel to the chaos is Bruceโs possessive lover Bob (Anthony Nannini), who is quite vocal about not being thrilled with Bruceโs attempt at a heterosexual relationship. Then there is Bruceโs therapist, Charlotte Wallace (Melanie Blue) and Prudenceโs therapist, Stuart Framincham (Raul Valenzuela). The latter seems more interested in seducing Prudence than in helping her. Whereas Charlotte comes off like the quintessential hippie shrink, if such a thing even exists. These two therapists are, frankly, more unstable than their patients. Stuart, apparently quite narcissistic, thinks there is nothing unprofessional about having sex with his patients. Charlotte (who misuses words so wildly it borders on poetry), provides some of the most laugh-out-loud moments. At one point she earnestly tells Bruce “Weโre all alone, everyoneโs crazy, and you have no choice but to be alone or to be with someone in what will be a highly imperfect and probably eventually unsatisfactory relationship.” Ms. Blueโs Charlotte steals almost every scene she is in. Whether trying to remember the word โsecretaryโ or talking to a stuffed Snoopy doll to fill in gaps in conversation, her delivery and physical mannerisms generate solid laughs.
The other stand-out performance for me was Ms. Merrittโs portrayal of Prudence, a woman who is a micron away from becoming a total mess. Merritt delivers a very realistic (and likeable) neurotic and made her totally believable. So, behind the laughs, you could still feel the pain and frustrations Prudence was experiencing.
Durangโs genius lies in his ability to balance outrageous comedy with real human emotion. Beneath the eccentricities, these characters are deeply relatable, yearning for connection, struggling with insecurities, and trying (and often failing) to find happiness. The dialogue is lightning-fast, the situations are delightfully ridiculous, and the overall energy makes Beyond Therapy a very funny play.
If youโre looking for theatre that will have you laughing from start to finish while still having emotional truth, Beyond Therapy is the perfect prescription! Just donโt expect to leave with any real therapeutic advice.
