It seems, we are informally commemorating an important transition in leadership this week. On Monday, our
We are excited to announce, Mary Sue Allen – Acting CEO and Board Member from the LGBTQ Center of the Desert.
Since a lot of folks will want to know more about the new CEO, we asked Mary Sue to tell us a bit about herself:
“I’m a native Californian, born and raised in the Bay Area with my 4 sisters and 2 brothers. I moved to Southern California after high school. When I was 19, I came to Palm Springs for the first time for Dinah Shore Weekend. I feel in LOVE with Palm Springs and made a promise with myself that I would live here one day.”
It would appear that promise is kept, but with the added exciting opportunity to lead the Center during an important change. When did you make the move to Palm Springs?
“36 years later, in 2015, when I became a fulltime resident of Palm Springs. Palm Springs is definitely my “forever home”. Living in the one of the gayest cities in USA has allowed me to be my most authentic self-everyday.”
With the departure of Mike Thompson, you have assumed the role of CEO for the foreseeable future. Are you excited?
“Stepping in as Interim CEO at The LGBTQ Center of the Desert was a super easy decision for me, having served on the Board since 2015, I knew I had passion for the work and I am excited to stand in while we conduct a nationwide search for our new CEO.”
Looking back and now looking forward with the Center as one of your top priorities, what words of encouragement might you share with folks throughout our community?
“So, I’m looking forward to leaving 2020 in the rear view mirror and I welcome the opportunity to serve my LGBTQ community and The Center’s supporters in my new role. 2021 is going to be a great year, as we take everything we’ve learned during the pandemic and the past 4 years of Trumpism, and use it to inform how we do business, how we connect and fight for marginalized people, and how we serve our community in the safest, most inclusive and fun way!”
Thank you so much, Mary Sue Allen, for taking the time to respond to our questions. We look forward to working with you and wish you and the LGBTQ Center’s entire community the very best always.
