Everyone is Welcome at L-Fund's Gumbo Gala!

L-Fund is very excited at the success of their first two Gumbo Gala Fundraisers, and is thrilled to have booked The Palm Springs Pavillion during Dinah Shore weekend for their 3rd Annual Affair. The FUNDRAISER includes choice of award-winning gumbo (seafood/chicken/sausage or vegetarian) by Chef Betty Berrysmith (featured in the above video), awards presentation to honoree Katherine V Forrest, Novelist [remember lesbian detective Kate Dellafield?] and Editor; plus special guest Kate Kendell, Esq and Executive Director of NCLR; entertainment by Gennine Jackson, and dancing, of course!  For tickets & info, visit L-fund.org.

The L-Fund is a Lesbian Philanthropic Group, founded in 2012, serving Lesbians in financial need, assisting Lesbians in the Coachella Valley to resolve short-term financial crises (unlike traditional social service or financial aid agencies that deal with long-term assistance).

The L-Fund's established reserve account often allows them to respond to a request within 24 to 48 hours. "This is the only Lesbian organization in the valley to provide immediate financial relief in an emergency situation," says L-Fund's President, Barbara Carpenter. The emotional outpouring from gift recipients creates a sense of community that inspires the Core Group, co-founders and president to do more.  For tickets & info, and to make financial contributions, visit L-fund.org.

Bean an LGBT-themed Documentary to Screen at AmDocs

Alana and Lori were just two LGBT 20-somethings looking for love on Tinder when a casual right swipe made a match that would bind them together forever.

Le Ride to Open AmDocs 2017

The American Documentary Film Festival's 2017 opening night film will be Phil Keoghan’s new documentary, Le Ride. Keoghan, best known as the host of the popular television show, The Amazing Race, will attend the screening, which is also the West Coast Premiere of his film. Le Ride had its world premiere at the New Zealand International Film Festival in July 2016.

“This is an example of great documentary filmmaking, where the creator, in this case Phil Keoghan, was inspired to tell a relatively unknown piece of history in an unconventional way,” said Ted Grouya, Festival Director. “Le Ride will appeal to a wide audience as it is timeless, evocative, good-story telling.”

Opening Night for the 2017 edition of The American Documentary Film Festival is scheduled for Friday, March 31st at the Camelot Theatres in Palm Springs. GayDesertGuide is a media sponsor of this event.  Early Bird passes are on sale now by clicking here

Stage One: Southern Baptist Sissies

Writes critic Stephen Radosh, "SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES by Del Shores is a story that will touch everyone and will especially resonate with any member of the LGBT community who was brought up in a very religious environment. It raises some serious questions, such as how a religion which preaches to ‘love thy neighbor’ can also preach hatred and intolerance of anyone who does not conform to its ideas of the norm."

If you appreciate plays that have something meaningful to say, then this production of SOUTHERN BAPTIST SISSIES, which runs through April 9th at the Desert Rose Playhouse, should be on your must-see list."  The full review.

Stage Two: Chapatti

Dezart Performs presents Chapatti by Christian O'Reilly, Fridays and Saturdays @ 7:30 PM, Saturdays and Sundays @ 2:00 PM

Romance is a distant memory for two lonely animal-lovers. When Dan and his dog, Chapatti, cross paths with Betty and her 19 cats, an unexpected spark begins a warm and gentle story about two people re-discovering the importance of human companionship. “Unfolding in a mix of heartache, despair and gentle comedy, it will leave you cheering for these two characters’ hard-won moments of happiness,” says the Chicago Sun-Times.  More info

Stage Three: Disgraced

Through April 2nd (if you can possibly find a ticket), CVRep presents Disgraced.  The show is a winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.  Variety reports, …Blistering social drama about the racial prejudices that secretly persist in progressive cultural circles."

The synopsis?  "Amir Kapoor is a successful Pakistani-American lawyer who is rapidly moving up the corporate ladder while distancing himself from his cultural roots. Emily, his wife, is white; she’s an artist, and her work is influenced by Islamic imagery. When the couple hosts a dinner party, what starts out as a friendly conversation escalates into something far more damaging"  More Info
