Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Honors the Legacy of Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor will be honored posthumously with the Partners for Life Award during the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Gala on February 11. She joins already announced honorees, Humanitarian Barbara Keller and Eisenhower Medical Center’s President and Chief Executive Officer, G. Aubrey Serfling and its Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Martin J. Massiello. Elizabeth Taylor’s eldest granddaughter, Laela Wilding, will accept the award on behalf of Taylor’s family.

Elizabeth Taylor is remembered as an early leader and advocate for the care of people living with HIV and AIDS. Outraged by the inaction of the government to address the AIDS crisis, Elizabeth Taylor and Dr. Michael Gottlieb partnered with Dr. Mathilde Krim to create amfAR, the American Foundation for AIDS Research. The legendary actress and spokesperson for the organization helped amfAR raise hundreds of millions of dollars for AIDS research. In 1991, she started her own organization, The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF), to support the provision of direct care and services to people living with HIV and AIDS, often to the most marginalized populations. Today, ETAF also provides funding for HIV prevention education and advocacy programs throughout the world.

“Elizabeth Taylor witnessed the AIDS epidemic ravage the gay community in the early 80’s. The people suffering were her colleagues, her allies, and her friends,” said Joel Goldman, Managing Director of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. “Instead of turning her back and remaining silent like so many, Elizabeth Taylor used her massive platform to fight fear and prejudice, and fight for treatment, and a cure. The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation is proud to continue her legacy and support Desert AIDS Project, an organization that marches on and continues to help those living with HIV.”  More Info
