I'm taking the liberty of making our "Bookmarks" (curated by listings editor Alex McCune) the lead story, as one of our famous neighbors has officially come out of the closet – Massimo Dobrovic!  He and his husband are such sweethearts, not to mention big-hearted.  Massimo devoted his time and talent to help Desert AIDS Project clients produce a powerful play as a tool for fighting their own isolation – an incredibly moving journey.

Opera in the Park

Opera in the Park is the premier cultural event in April in Palm Springs. This year’s free concert will he held this Sunday, April 9, 2017 1-4 pm at Sunrise Park in Palm Springs.  Opera in the Park is dedicated to the memory of Michael C. Cressey (1948-2015.) The concert of opera arias is expected to again draw thousands of people from all over Southern California in a celebration of great opera music with a professional orchestra conducted by Valery Ryvkin.  More info.

Opera Under the Stars – Indian Wells

Opera Under the Stars is an evening of delightful operatic arias by world-class singers, taking place Sunday, April 9, 2017 – 6:30 PM, at The Renaissance Indian Wells.  The evening will include a presentation of the St. Cecilia Patron of Music Award to Joe Giarrusso and Bob Poehling
for their years of supporting music in the Coachella Valley
 


Heels for Healing: An Anti-Bullying Drag Benefit!

Drag queens from Priscilla Queen of the Desert to those gals in Kinky Boots have been known to do some fancy stepping in super high heels. On Wednesday, April 12, some of the area’s most popular drag queens will perform in Heels for Healing, a national event designed to stomp out bullying. The local all-star evening features Bella Da Ball, Arial Trampway, Mystic Befierce Miller, Mona Sa’More and many others. The event will be held at 7:30 PM at the Palm Canyon Theater at 538 N. Palm Canyon Drive. The evening of one-of-a-kind performances will send all proceeds to LGBT students across the desert. Get tickets at the theater’s box office.

Well, Hello, Jerry!  One Night Only Celebrates the Music of Jerry Herman

Hello Jerry, composer Jerry Herman that is! You’re being celebrated at 6:30 PM April 20 at a One Night Only performance at the McCallum Theatre for the Performing Arts, Palm Desert, with a following VIP reception at Agua California Bistro at The River in Rancho Mirage. Internationally renowned photographer/producer Michael Childers assembled a cast of over 20 of the best Broadway and Hollywood performers in Hello Jerry, a musical tribute to composer Jerry Herman. Directed by Jason Graae with music direction by Christopher Marlowe, the cast will perform songs from classic Jerry Herman musicals, including Hello Dolly, Mame, La Cage Aux Folles, and others.
