Southern Baptist Sissies Come to Town
Opening this weekend. Religion clashing with sexuality. Through April 9 at The Desert Rose Playhouse, performances are Fridays & Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 2 PM.
Chicago Tribune: "Distinctive and arresting. A funny and yet strangely moving treatment of goodhearted, wacky Texans suffering through an intolerant world."
The acclaimed play follows the journey of four gay boys in the Calvary Baptist Church of Dallas, TX. Storyteller Mark Lee Fuller tries to create a world of love and acceptance in the church and clubs of Dallas, while desperately trying to find a place to put his own pain and rage. The world Mark creates also includes two older barflies, Peanut and Odette, whose banter takes the audience from hysterical laughter to tragedy and tears.
With a theme of religion clashing with sexuality, the play opened to rave reviews in Los Angeles during its original run in 2000 and became the most awarded play of the year.
The play contains adult material and brief nudity. Tickets are $35 for Friday and Saturday evening performances and $32 for Sunday matinees. More Info
California Desert Chorale presents We've Got Ritmo
Saturday and Sunday, California Desert Chorale’s spring concert, We’ve Got Ritmo, is divided into two distinctly different halves, which compliment each other ideally. Act 1 will feature dynamic, percussive choral music of Latin America, including driving, rhythmic music of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico by Oscar Escalada, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Ariel Ramirez. Act 2 is devoted exclusively to the extraordinary music of George Gershwin, including such classic favorites as I Got Rhythm, Love Is Here to Stay, Fascinatin’ Rhythm and Someone to Watch Over Me, along with a dazzling medley of songs from Gershwin’s only opera, Porgy and Bess.
