Dining Out For Life Record Breaking Envelope Totals!

Cyris Wyant, Desert AIDS Project's Volunteer & Fundraising Coordinator, write, "I wanted to let you know that this year’s envelope total collected from the volunteer ambassadors was one for the record books.  All of your hard work and dedication resulted in $43,000 in envelope donations (and counting!) last Thursday.  This is up 37% from last year’s total of $31,350! 
 
This money will help our clients in so many ways including helping to stock our Food Depot, providing safe sex kits, helping clients with housing, helping cover expenses for our Career Building Program, providing dental care visits, helping clients with substance abuse and mental health counseling as well as medical and home health care. 
 
Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy lives in order to make this the best Dining Out For Life yet!  Your hard work will have an impact on so many people and I am very humbled and honored to work with the best volunteer team ever!"

And the Harvey B. Milk Leadership Award Goes To…

The Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast Committee announced that Community Organizer and Civil Rights Advocate Ruth Debra will be the recipient of the 2017 Harvey B. Milk Leadership Award at the 6th Annual Coachella Valley Harvey Milk Diversity Breakfast on Friday, May 19, 2017, at the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Ruth, who defines herself as a radical old lesbian feminist, moved to Palm Springs in 2003 with her spouse Sherry Fulton. On moving to Palm Springs, she became involved with Pride, and subsequently The Pride and then Golden Rainbow Centers, serving several years on their boards.  Active in Democratic politics, she has served as the first female Chair of Desert Stonewall Democrats.  She is on the National Steering Committee for Old Lesbians Organizing for Change (OLOC) and facilitates a Coachella Valley group of Old Lesbians.  She also volunteers with Equality CA, and has been active in the marriage equality movement, marrying Sherry on October 11, 2008 (National Coming Out Day) during the brief window of legality in California.

Reeves is the recipient of the Dinah Washington Award, a Rhythm n’ Blues Foundation Pioneer Award, a Black Woman in Publishing Legends Award, and has been inducted in the Alabama, Soul, Rock and Roll, and Vocal Group halls of fame. “Dancing in the Street” has been entered into the Library of Congress Registry of Historical Recordings and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Martha Reeves and the Vandellas are listed among Rolling Stone magazine’s “100 Immortal Artists” and Martha herself was named one of the “30 Top Lead Singers of all Time.” 

One of the desert’s most enjoyable and beloved fundraising events, Evening Under the Stars will continue its traditional ‘Dance Party’ theme with dancing immediately after the show with DJ Jerry Bonham on the main stage. Join the party!

Coming soon: Palm Springs will be awash in men from May 5 to May 8 for the annual White Party, gay men’s retreat. Typically, about 30,000 revelers from the world over to participate in the event that includes wall-to-wall pool parties at the Renaissance Palm Springs hotel such as: the kick off Splash 1 from noon to 6 PM May 5; Splash 2, aptly subtitled Addicted to Boys, from 10 AM to 7 PM May 6; and Splash 3: One Day in Heaven from 10 AM to 4 PM May 7.

There will be parties such as a Military Ball, drinks, dancing, play and of course swimming.
