It started as a tongue-in-cheek comment about making designer face masks out of Chanel, Dior, and Pucci silk scarves in reference to the cancelation of Fashion Week. But the next day, Stefan Hill found himself heeding the call for face masks to donate to the LGBT Center of the Desert for Community Food Bank volunteers to wear in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. Leveraging the sudden interest in masks, Hill has recruited neighbors and friends to help not only make masks but raise funds to support the Food Bank. In just 10 days of mask-making, they produced about 550 masks and raised over $5,000, from donations of $10 or more per mask. This is enough to fully fund Food Bank operations for 5 weeks, and now they’ve set their sights on raising enough funds to support another 3 months!
Cotton masks can be had for a donation of $10 or more, and yes, those designer silk masks were no joke. Stefan will make those for a donation of $50 or more.
