Beginning in January, Desert Outlook magazine launches OutBook Club as a part of our commitment to connecting the LGBTQ community, and celebrating the joy and tradition of sharing our stories. Supported by the Palm Springs Cultural Center, Just Fabulous and the Palm Springs Public Library, this monthly book club will highlight a mix of LGBTQ new releases and influential classics.
Desert Outlook book critic and columnist J. Corbett Holmes will lead discussions around each month’s selection, in tandem with his book reviews published each month in the magazine. And when possible, featured authors will join the conversation.
Each book selection will be announced the previous month in the magazine. The OutBook Club will meet the third Tuesday of each month, with the inaugural meeting planned for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Camelot Theatres, 2300 E. Baristo Road in Palm Springs. Follow Desert Outlook on Facebook or Twitter for book club updates.
To join OUTBook, simply pick up and read our first selection, “Dragon at the Edge of a Flat World: Portraits and Revelations,” by opera singer and first-time author Joseph Keckler. Akin to David Sedaris’ work, this diverse essay collection of multi-faceted character studies offers a plethora of clever and queer observations on everyday life.

Copies of the book (print, audio and digital) are available to borrow — first come, first served — at the Palm Springs Public Library, and for purchase at book stores and online booksellers like
