This week, we say goodbye – for now – to Mike Thompson, who is leaving the The LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert where he served as CEO through so much of the organization’s transition and growth over the last several years. As just a small token of our immense appreciation for leading us all towards a more vibrant community, Gay Desert Guide is proud to recognize Mike Thompson as our Man Crush on this Monday, February 1, 2021.
In 2016, Mike, along with the Center’s Board of Directors, staff, and several dedicated volunteers, opened the doors to the newly purchased and remodeled facility, the McDonald-Wright Building located at 1301 North Palm Canyon. Four years later, the Center closed its physical doors along with practically every business and organization across the country, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Mike and his team quickly adapted the Center’s programming for virtual access to its many members, thus continuing their mission – uninterrupted – to help LGBTQ people along their way.
Mike made the decision to move back to his home state of Oklahoma with his partner, which he announced in Fall 2020. He will be greatly missed throughout our community but we are confident we will see Mike advocating for equality and justice for all – uninterrupted – going forward and always.
Thank you, Mike Thompson.
