ShortFest is Here!

Palm Springs International Film Society's ShortFest is the largest and best attended short film event in North America, and it opened on Tuesday running through Monday, June 25.  ShortFest presents more than 325 short films from over 100 countries packaged into 90-100 minute themed programs. Monday is "Best of the Fest" and we're sure some of the short from Thursday's "Gay!La" programs will be included.  We loved "Femme" and "Men Don't Whisper". Gay Desert Guide is proud to be media sponsor with ShortFest for the first time this year! Outfest Tickets on Sale Now

Tickets are now on sale to the general public for the 36th Anniversary of Outfest – the Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization promoting equality by creating, sharing, and protecting LGBTQ stories on the screen. OC and SF Pride this Weekend

The Orange County Pride Parade and Festival returns Saturday, June 23 with parade at 10:30 a.m., and festival from 12:00–10:00 p.m in downtown Santa Ana. Also this weekend: the largest gathering of the LGBT community and allies in the nation at the San Francisco Pride Celebration and Parade. The festival is at City Center plaza on Saturday and Sunday, June 23–24, and the 48th Annual San Francisco Gay Pride Parade is on Sunday, June 24th at 10:30 a.m. More info
 


Art Laboe's Summer Love Jam VII

Looking ahead to next weekend: On Saturday, June 30, at 7:00 pm., join The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa for Art Laboe's Summer Love Jam VII, featuring: Deniece Williams, Manhattans, Peaches and Herb, MC Magic, Lighter Shade of Brown, and Aalon. This is the seventh year that renowned disc jockey Art Laboe will bring his Summer Love Jam to The Show with a stellar lineup of performers and a fantastic house band. Get tickets


HRC and "Open to All"

In light of the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in the Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Stonewall Awards Gala is Thursday June 28

On Thursday, June 28, the Stonewall Humanitarian Awards Gala will celebrate the 49th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. The Gala will take place at Mary Pickford Theatre in Cathedral City with a special musical performance by SVET, an Electro Hip Hop Violinist as seen on America’s Got Talent. This event is also and educational platform for youth to learn the importance of Stonewall, and SVET will be joined by LGBTQ+ Palm Springs High School Student violinists. Funds benefit the Transgender Community Coalition to continue services for the LGBTQ+ Community. Get tickets

The 39 Steps

Desert Theatreworks presents The 39 Steps, opening Friday, June 22 and running through Sunday, July 1. The Hitchcock thriller, adapted into an ingenious comic stage play, features a cast of four talented actors portraying more than 150 zany characters with a mix of melodrama, fast-paced action and lots of quick-change costuming, all in just 100 minutes. Women Behind Bars

The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Coachella Valley’s LGBTQ+ Stage Company, presents Women Behind Bars, a comedy by Tom Eyen, opening Friday, June 22, 2018 for a six-week run. In this hilarious satire on B-movies of the 1950's, Mary Eleanor, an innocent duped into crime, lands in the Greenwich Village Woman's House of Detention. The prison is presided over by a massive matron with a taste for sadism and female flesh. Our heroine, now Caged in the Big House, learns about life The Hard Way. Get tickets

 

Andrew Pearson's "…blank page…"

Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre presents "this is a blank page. a story, in motion," a dance-theater work by Andrew Pearson, for three performances: Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21 at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, July 22 at 2:00 p.m.  Pearson explores themes such as partnership, identity, sexuality, comfort zones, and more. His work has been presented by numerous festivals and he has served as an Artist in Residence for several schools, and created work for the LA Contemporary Dance Company, among others. Get tickets

Village People at The Show on July 14

In the beginning, Village People was simply Victor Willis singing four songs with professional background singers. The first Village People album quickly rose to the top of the dance charts and demand for the “group” to appear in concert and on television shows like American Bandstand and Merv Griffin forced producers and Willis to put together an actual group!  What began as four tracks became the music of Village People, putting smiles on the faces of fans all around the world for 40 years.
