Let us be your Gay Desert Guide to the weekend! We are looking ahead to a variety of 4th of July celebrations in the Coachella Valley, and not all of them are on the 4th! We can also celebrate with Golden Girls Live!,  Art Leboe's Summer Love Jam, Velvet: Summer Escape party for ladies, an art reception hosted by Armistead Maupin. It's also your last chance to see The Judy Show at the Purple Room this season, enjoy the spirit of the desert with Moonlit Mojave, enjoy some great theatre, or even learn how to care for bonsai at Wabi Sabi! Independence Day

While the Fourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year, many may choose to kick off their Independence Day celebrations this weekend. CCBC is having a pool party on Saturday, June 30th from 10:00 a.m–7:00 p.m., with BBQ, Prizes, and Real Wienie eating contest (more info). The City of Coachella is also celebrating a little early on Sunday, July 1 at 6:00 p.m. at Bagdouma Park with with music, food vendors, carnival rides and games, kids activities and wrapping up with a fireworks extravaganza (more info). Fantasy Springs Resort Casino also celebrates early, with July 4th with fireworks on July 3rd (more info).

The Palm Springs and Cathedral City Fire Departments would like to remind residents and visitors that all fireworks, including “Safe and Sane,” are illegal in California. Safe and Sane fireworks that are sold to the public only refer to fireworks that do not fly or explode such as sparklers, fountains, snake items and spinners. State-approved fireworks may be sold in Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, and Indio.


 

Velvet Summer Escape – Part Deux

The Golden Girls Live! Comes to Palm Springs

San Francisco's legendary Golden Girls production descends on Palm Springs for the first time ever for multiple performances from Wednesday, June 27–Sunday July 1 at Oscar’s Cafe and Bar. This loving send up of two episodes of the uproariously funny TV show The Golden Girls features San Francisco’s leading drag comic performers bringing the Fab Four to life live on stage. The four drag stars playing the characters the entire world has come to know and love are Heklina (Dorothy), Matthew Martin (Blanche), D’Arcy Drollinger (Rose), and Holotta Tymes (Sophia). Art Laboe's Summer Love Jam VII

On Saturday, June 30, at 7:00 pm., join The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa for Art Laboe's Summer Love Jam VII, featuring: Deniece Williams, Manhattans, Peaches and Herb, MC Magic, Lighter Shade of Brown, and Aalon. ShortFest, Outfest, Cinema Diverse

ShortFest 2018 wrapped up this past weekend, and the Best of the Festival Award went to Fauve (Canada), by Jérémy Comte. The full list of winners is available here. Congrats all and thank you for making this a great festival!

 

We are just a couple of weeks away from Outfest 2018, the Los Angeles LGBTQ Film Festival celebrating its 36th anniversary this year: July 12–22, 2018. As previously announced, the festival opens at the Orpheum Theatre with Kino Lorber’s “Studio 54,” Matt Tyrnauer’s vibrantly nostalgic documentary; and closes with FilmRise’s “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” Desiree Akhavan’s Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner starring Chloë Grace Moretz. Looking ahead to the Palm Springs Gay & Lesbian film festival, Cinema Diverse: Mark your calendars for September 20–23, 2018 for the 11th Anniversary Edition! The selection committee is screening films this summer and accepting submissions now. More info

 


Armistead Maupin Hosts "The Art of Christopher Turner" Reception

Join Armistead Maupin on Saturday, June 30 from 5:00–7:00 p.m. for an Artist Reception with Christopher Turner in the Lounge of Eight4Nine Restaurant and Lounge. Exhibited at EIGHT4NINE, this new series is a collaboration between photographer CHRISTOPHER TURNER and playwright ALAN OLEJNIZAK. Each piece includes a subject dressed in modern corporate attire in dark and sometimes post-apocalyptic settings – evoking themes from classical mythology and literature. 25% of the artists' profits for this show will be donated to support the Salton Sea Action Committee. Women Behind Bars

The Desert Rose Playhouse, the Coachella Valley’s LGBTQ+ Stage Company, presents Women Behind Bars, a comedy by Tom Eyen, running through Sunday, July 29. In this hilarious satire on B-movies of the 1950's, Mary Eleanor, an innocent duped into crime, lands in the Greenwich Village Woman's House of Detention. Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre presents "this is a blank page. a story, in motion," a dance-theater work by Andrew Pearson, for three performances: Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21 at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, July 22 at 2:00 p.m.  Pearson explores themes such as partnership, identity, sexuality, comfort zones, and more. His work has been presented by numerous festivals and he has served as an Artist in Residence for several schools, and created work for the LA Contemporary Dance Company, among others. Get tickets
