International Bear Convergence (IBC): Hear Them Roar!
International Bear Convergence (IBC) is the premier winter event for Bears & admirers in Palm Springs, California. The four-day event will come to life with DJs, live entertainment and thousands of bears from around the globe. The last four years were hugely successful and they expect more of the same in 2018 with record-breaking attendance for their 5th Anniversary.
Events for the weekend include:
- Screening of "Where the Bears Are: Season 6", Palm Springs Cultural Center, Thu 7:30-10:30pm
- Three days of pool parties, presented by Chill Bar, Hunters Nightclub, and Toucan's Tiki Lounge, respectively, Hard Rock Pool, 10am-4pm (5pm Sat)
- Populart Artist Reception and Meet the Cast of Where the Bears Are, Fillmore Room, Sat 5-7pm
- Live Performance by Martha Wash ("It's Raining Men," "Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" during "Divas and Bears" dance party, Woodstock Ballroom, Sat 10pm-3am
- Drag Brunch Sunday with Tommi Rose, Sun 11am-1pm
- Leather & Gear Party, Woodstock Ballroom, Sun 10pm-2am
2018 Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards
Emmy-Award winning TV personality, style expert, fashion designer and New York Times best-selling author Carson Kressley will replace Ross Mathews as host of the 24th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. It was announced last week that Mathews will be sequestered in the Big Brother Celebrity House as he competes in the first celebrity season of the long-running reality show that begins airing on February 7 on CBS. Veteran R&B group En Vogue performs the main event entertainment, with Thelma Houston singing for the after party.
This year’s awards will shine a bright spotlight on local community members who have dedicated their time, talent and energy to ensuring D.A.P. is able to provide compassionate care to those who need it most. Tony Marchese, owner of Trio Restaurant, will receive the Partners for Life Award, and Dr. Shubha Kerkar, MD, HIVMA, MACP, AAHIVS, Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease Specialist, will be recognized with the 100 Women Award. The event also features a massive silent auction that supports much of Desert AIDS Project's local work, including the new PRePNPlay video campaign.

GDG Editor Brad Fuhr to Receive Community Award, Launch Local Chapter of "Gay For Good"
On Monday, Feb. 12, Gay Desert Guide founding editor Brad Fuhr will receive the City of Palm Springs Human Rights Commission Community Service Award for "Promoting Universal Human Rights Closer to Home". "I'm going to springboard that into a new community service group that is near and dear to my heart, 'Gay For Good'," says Mr. Fuhr in the invitation to an informational reception following the ceremony. The reception will be held at RetroRoom Lounge from about 4:30-6:30pm; attendees will enjoy appetizers provided by Oscar's Cafe & Bar 3 and no host bar with happy hour prices.
OUT For Laughs' February Comedy Benefit Series Continues With Alec Mapa
Comedians Shann Carr and Max Mitchell present LA’s hottest LGBT headliners in OUT for Laughs at the Palm Springs Cultural Center (formerly Camelot Theatre) in Palm Springs every Thursday in February. This week's headliner is actor/comedian Alec Mapa (Switched at Birth, Devious Maids), whose 2014 concert film Alec Mapa: Baby Daddy mined humor from his experience adopting a foster child with his husband. The evening benefits the local Foster Care facility Sanctuary Palm Springs.
Erin Foley (Feb 15, for Joy Silver for California Senate 28th District) and closer Jimmy James (Feb 22, for the LGBT Center) will round out the month of comedy for a cause.
Palm Springs Winter Classic Softball Tournament
AIDS Assistance Program – Food Samaritans, in cooperation with the City of Palm Springs and the Palm Springs Gay Softball League, presents the 27th annual Palm Springs Winter Classic Softball Tournament. Eighty teams and hundreds of LGBT softball players will compete.
Games will be played at Demuth Park (4365 E. Mesquite Ave, Palm Springs) and Big League Dreams Sports Park in Cathedral City. Games will start at 8 a.m. both days with finals in all divisions played at Big League Dreams.
