Unholy! You’ve heard that song on KGAY 106.5 and everywhere this past year as the Sam Smith/Kim Petras hit permeated our collective playlists.

Sam let the spotlight shine on Kim at Sunday’s Grammy Awards as she became the first transgender artist to win the coveted award. 10 queer artists were nominated overall, according to metroweekly. It’s about Damn Time!

Representation matters and it’s heartening to see examples in pop culture as the wars continue in places like Florida. It was great to see Brandi Carlile being introduced by her wife and kids, for example.

A local example is the recent update article we posted about Stevee, whom you may remember from her years with the local couple who founded Sanctuary. She recently was on stage handing out American Music Awards. All these images of our community help change hearts and minds. And it can’t happen soon enough.

The Other Side

The Riverside County NAACP Youth Council and Empower You Edutainment present The Other Side in honor of Black History Month on Thursday, February 9 from 6:30–7:45 pm at the Annenberg Theater. This poignant and breathtaking drama by local playwright Nia Sharron Campbell follows the interracial friendship of two best friends who are as close and devoted as sisters. When a devastating act of violence in their community directly affects them both, a rift forms in their friendship and racial tensions surge in their town. Free admission, registration required. Palm Springs Yappy Hour

Animal Samaritans presents Yappy Hour on the second Thursday each month, this month on Thursday, February 9 from 4–6 pm at the Margaritaville Desert Rose Garden. Gay Pilots’ Winter Warm-Up

The National Gay Pilots Association’s Palm Springs Winter Warm-Up takes place Thursday through Sunday, February 9–12 at the Renaissance Palm Springs. There’s an Early Bird reception on Thursday, and the event officially kicks off on Friday at the Palm Springs Air Museum, home to one of the largest collections of flyable WWII-era aircraft in the world. Malcolm Myers in Paris Gallery Show

Rubine Red Gallery presents Malcolm Myers in Paris at Atelier 17, 1951-52, a new exhibit running February 10–27 with an Opening Reception on Saturday, February 11 from 5–8 pm. ​This retrospective features paintings, etchings and intaglio works by famous American printmaker and painter Malcolm H. Myers during the time he spent in Paris, France in 1951-52. There he worked alongside peers including Joan Miró and experimented with new and novel techniques such as incorporating stencils and even spray paint into the centuries–old medium of etching and intaglio. His time there helped cement his legacy as a true American Great in the art of Printmaking. More info

Valentine’s Day Weekend: Moulin Rouge!
