Desert Art Center Gallery Reopens
The Desert Art Center Gallery reopens on Friday, September 3 at 10:00 a.m. The Coachella valley’s premier nonprofit art collective has two beautiful large exhibition galleries with artwork by 150 local artists. The galleries feature photography, jewelry, glass, ceramics, fiber art, mosaics, pastels, sketches, and all modes of painting. The Desert Art Center also offers a robust roster of art classes for kids and adults, plus arts-related presentations free to the community. More info

The Purple Room is Back!
After a long, COVID-induced shutdown, the Purple Room is back! For Labor Day Weekend—Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 3, 4 & 5, the great live jazz combo led by Mark Kahny will feature some of the area’s favorite singers. Also, for the first weekend, open dining — with reservations suggested although not required — will be instituted, the same as the Purple Room’s weekday format. Looking ahead, Purple Room faves will be getting back into the swing of things, including performances by Palm Springs JUMP! Lee Squared, Ann Hampton Callaway, Liz Callaway, Jonathan Karrant, Amanda McBroom, Sharon McNight, Marilyn Maye, Diane Schuur and Billy Stritch.
The Purple Room weekday lineup is back, too! Tuesdays feature Rose Mallett with Jazz & Blues. Wednesdays swing with Michael Holmes and Darci Daniels and their music of the Rat Pack era. Then Jazz, Broadway and ‘60s pop takes the stage Thursdays with Sharon Sills. More info

Saturday Summerific Sing-A-Long: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF

The Palm Springs Cultural Center and The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus present The All Summer Long Snazzy Sassy Songsational Summerific Sing-A-Long. This week, on Saturday, September 4, the evening’s movie musical is “Fiddler on the Roof,” the Oscar-winning adaptation of the Broadway musical about life among the Jewish community of a pre-revolutionary Russian village. A poor milkman, determined to find good husbands for his five daughters, consults the traditional matchmaker – and also has a word with God. At 6:00 p.m., come for social hour in the VIP Lounge upstairs, with film at 7:00 p.m. featuring Rosemary Galore and songleaders from the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus hosting an evening filled with film, fun, and song. Next week (Sept. 11), it’s the finale of the Summerific Sing-A-Long, with the audience-favorite “Mame.” Get tickets
The Rocky Horror Show
The Desert Rose Playhouse presents “The Rocky Horror Show,” running now through Sunday, September 12. A humorous tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies of the 1930s through to the early 1960s, the musical tells the story of a newly engaged couple getting caught in a storm and coming to the home of a mad transvestite scientist, Dr Frank-N-Furter. The doctor unveils his new creation, a sort of Frankenstein-style monster in the form of an artificially made, fully grown, physically perfect muscle man named Rocky, complete “with blond hair and a tan.” Get tickets
Agnes Pelton Exhibit Final Days

Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist, the first major exhibition since 1995 of the under-recognized American modernist painter who worked in Cathedral City is at the Palm Springs Art Museum through Sunday, September 5. Don’t miss your chance to see it before time runs out! Although she painted conventional landscapes and portraits, Pelton (1881–1961) is most celebrated for her abstract compositions that reflect her interest in esoteric subjects and occult philosophies, including numerology and Agni Yoga with its principal focus on fire as a guiding force. Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus Auditions
The Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus (PSGMC) will be holding its “Sing Out Proud” open call auditions on Tuesday, September 7 at 6:00 p.m. at the Mizell Center. This special evening of camaraderie will also be an opportunity to volunteer and get involved with one of the chorus’ many committees. Interested singers can also attend the open rehearsal that night at 7:00 p.m. to experience what it is like to perform with the chorus and meet its members. PSGMC continues to build ‘A Chorus Like No Other,’ with a commitment to a high standard of excellence in their performances. In the audition process, PSGMC will be recruiting singers for the main chorus, but also for their small ensemble groups “Bruce Kenyon’s The Arrangement” and “Gentlemen’s Agreement.” More info
Jazzville Palm Springs: Tony Guerrero Quintet
Jazzville, the live jazz scene presented by Barry Martin/DJ Baz and Take Five Entertainment, presents Tony Guerrero Quintet on Thursday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m. at the vibrant Cascade Lounge inside Agua Caliente Casino in Palm Springs. Tony Guerrero is a jazz flugelhornist, trumpeter, composer, and producer who’s garnered both critical success and a worldwide audience. He has toured much of the world as a headliner in major jazz festivals and has enjoyed commercial radio success not only with his own releases but with music he’s written for other artists, movies and television. Palm Canyon Theatre Presents “The Guys”
On Saturday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, September 12 at 2:00 p.m. Palm Canyon Theatre presents The Guys, a play by Anne Nelson about the aftereffects of the collapse of the World Trade Center. Tramway to Close for Annual Maintenance
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway will close for its annual maintenance routine, starting Tuesday, September 7 with a tentative reopening date of October 4, 2017 assuming all goes well. Safety first, especially when you’re ascending two-and-a-half miles up the cliffs of Chino Canyon, in a tram car supported by cables from the desert floor to the wilderness of Mt. San Jacinto State Park!
