The public is invited to explore the ecosystems of the Coachella Valley desert at Sunnylands’ final Family Day of the season.
“Family Day: In the Gardens” is open to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 23. Admission and parking are free.
Guests will have the opportunity to take part in several activities highlighting desert plants, bugs, and plant life, including:
- Guided bird walks at 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. with knowledgeable birders. The one-hour walks introduce guests to the many local and migratory bird species in the Sunnylands gardens.
- A community drumming circle ceremony with Circulo Azteca Citlaltonac at 9:30 a.m.
- Helping artist Zach Fleming Boyles create a mural inspired by the colors and shapes of the desert.
- Crafting your own hummingbird using recycled materials with S.C.R.A.P. Gallery.
- A display of red wiggler worms with representatives of Desert Compost, who will discuss composting methods.
- Insect and reptile exploration stations
- Making a mini, take-home ecosystem with students from Cathedral City High School’s International Baccalaureate Creativity, Activity, and Science program
- Discussions with members of the Desert Horticultural Society of the Coachella Valley and University of California, Riverside, master gardeners.
Visitors are also welcome to use a variety of toys and games that will be placed on the Great Lawn. The public is encouraged to dress for warm weather, bring sun protection, and stay hydrated for a fun and safe family outing.
