The Palm Springs Art Museum presents Outburst Project: Karla Ekatherine Canseco, Maria Maea, Clara Nieblas, Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya through January 29, 2023 in the main museum.

When the museum asked Outburst artist Gabriela Ruiz if she would like to select an artist to exhibit alongside her in the Summer 2022 Outburst program, she invited not one, but four of her fellow artists.

Ruiz explains: “We build a home and sense of safety through connections we find in our communities. I wanted to highlight this sense of community.”

Karla Ekatherine Canseco creates sculptures, videos, and performances that embrace the choreographies of her family’s labor and occupations, exploring her subjective history through material poetics and personal mythologies.

Maria Maea makes art connected to her Samoan and Mexican heritage, often using weaving as a way of embodying ancestral knowledge and recalling lost traditions.

Clara Nieblas, a figurative painter and art educator from the eastern Coachella Valley, creates work stemming from her personal and familial experience and expressing her individual voice in the face of a history of social injustice.

Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya’s sculptures evoke monstrous creatures associated with mutant Nahuales, shapeshifting figures from Mesoamerican folk tradition.

The museum is open 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday, Friday and Saturday. On Thursday the museum is open from noon to 8 pm. (Free admission on Thursdays from 5:00-8:00 pm - funded by the City of Palm Springs).
