WOMEN’S MARCH FOUNDATION PULLS PERMIT FOR #METOO MARILYN PROTEST IN PALM SPRINGS! STOP #METOOMARILYN, a peaceful protest against reinstallation of the sexist and retrograde 26 foot tall “Forever Marilyn” statue in Downtown Palm Springs scheduled for Sunday, June 20! PALM SPRINGS, CA – JUNE 14, 2021— Women’s March Foundation has announced that it will support and join the peaceful protest, #METOOMARILYN, of the reinstallation of the ‘Forever Marilyn’ 26 foot statue prior to and during the statue’s unveiling ceremony on Sunday, June 20, from 6:00 -7:30 pm. Installation is due to begin at 7:30 a.m., according to a spokesperson for PS Resorts. A number of organizations; CReMa: Comittee to Relocate Marilyn, Change.org/metoomarilyn Petition Supporters, Palm Springs Together have come together to appeal to the relocation of the statue. Some of the organizations’ objections are the following: • PS Resorts, a hotel group funded and enabled by the City of Palm Springs, has purchased this colossus which promotes sexual objectification of a beloved icon in the era of #metoo. • Many in the Palm Springs community do not want a frozen-in-time, monument to misogyny as the centerpiece of our city. • Why is the City of Palm Springs and PS Resorts promoting up skirting as a fun, free, family activity? • The statue will block the sightline to the Palm Springs Art Museum, despite community outrage and lack of support from the Museum. • Marilyn Monroe’s larger than life panty-clad butt will greet you as you exit the Museum. Elizabeth Armstrong, former Palm Springs Art Museum director and leader of the "Me Too Marilyn" group, has called the statue "hyper-sexualized" and said the Palm Springs City Council did not solicit enough public input before deciding on the Museum Way location. “The court of public opinion is saying that (the city) made a mistake, and should admit it. And they still can change it," Elizabeth Armstrong to the Desert Sun. “The 26-foot-tall "statue" of Marilyn Monroe is designed for viewers to walk in between the legs, look up her dress and snap a picture of her crotch or buttocks for fun. It is sexist, exploitive and misogynistic. Even in death, Marilyn has no peace. We are demanding the statue be moved #metoomarilyn has no place in Palm Springs.”— Jenn Carson, Executive Director, Women’s March Inland Empire WHO: Women’s March LA, Women’s March Inland Empire, Women’s March Riverside, Women’s Issues Committee of Courageous Resistance of the Desert / Indivisible 36, CReMa: Comittee to Relocate Marilyn, Change.org/metoomarilyn Petition Supporters, Palm Springs Together, Local citizens, business owners, homeowners WHAT: Peaceful protest against the sexist and retrograde 26 foot tall “Forever Marilyn” statue in Downtown Palm Springs.
