The LGBT Community Center of The Desert presents Knits Purls
Join instructor Douglas Morris as he teaches you how much fun and how easy it can be to learn knitting and make your own knitwear!
The class is designed to teach beginners the basics of knitting, but is also useful to those knitters in need of a refresher course. It will start with the basics of casting on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and binding off. The class will progress with one simple pattern combining all of these new skills into one sample swatch and then will culminate with a more complex scarf pattern. During these two projects the students will also be taught how to read their knitting, how to fix mistakes and how to unknit if they find a mistake in their project.
After these two projects, students will be encouraged to select their own patterns to start a more ambitious skill set. Depending on the pattern or garment selected, they will need many different potential skills i.e. how to create cables, how to increase and decrease stitches, creating a garment to size, color work and button holes, for example.
While working on individual projects, the students will also get an ever-expanding education about reading patterns, new stitches, tips and tricks, yarn weights and fiber content, creating garments that fit, and the multitude of online knitting resources for problem solving.
Students will need to bring a No. 8 US circular bamboo needle and a (solid light color) worsted weight yarn to the first class. Any yarn content is OK but knitting is easier when working with a high wool content yarn.
Approximate cost of materials is around $12 to $15.
