Event Details

Sunnylands Center & Gardens, reopening for a new season Sept. 11, revives the 1950s genre with the return of its outdoor movie series, Films on the Great Lawn.  Presented in partnership with the Palm Springs International Film Festival, the screenings on three consecutive Fridays in September are free to the public. Space invaders.  The “Soviet menace.”  Nuclear holocaust. The concerns of Americans after World War II gave rise to a new movie genre in Hollywood—science fiction thrillers that highlighted the dangers of the Atomic Age or, with extraterrestrials as a proxy, the prospect of an invasion by the country’s Cold War enemies. The movies and their screening dates are:
  • Sept. 13: Invasion of the Body Snatchers – A small-town doctor learns that the population of his community is being replaced by alien duplicates.
  • Sept. 20: The War of the Worlds – A small town in California is attacked by Martians, beginning a worldwide invasion.
  • Sept. 27: The Thing from Another World! – Scientists and U.S. Air Force officials fight a bloodthirsty alien at a remote arctic outpost.
All movies start at 7:30 p.m.  Gates open at 7:00 p.m. Filmgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets, and small picnics. Large coolers, alcohol, smoking, and pets are not permitted. Carpooling is advised. Films may be canceled at any time due to weather conditions, including rain, lightning, or strong winds.
