Auteur filmmaker Terry Gilliam began his career as the only American member of the Monty Python comedy troupe, responsible for the iconic cut-out animations used in the opening credits and as a segue between skits on the BBC’s "Monty Python's Flying Circus". Gilliam has been described as a “magically distinctive” director with a wholly original visual and narrative style. His body of work is best known for elements of fantasy and black comedy, centered on themes of the imagination, dystopian futures, and surreality. Notorious for his battles with studios to bring his uncompromised vision to screen, Gilliam’s films inhabit elaborate, fantastical worlds using grand set pieces and practical effects.
