The Mizell Center presents its 3rd Wednesday Speaker Series: LA A Queer History - Where it All Began on Wednesday, November17th

L.A. A Queer History: Where it all Began a film by Gregorio Davila will be shown on Wednesday, November 17th at 5:30 pm with a discussion with the Director and guests at 7:30 pm.

The history and culture of Los Angeles' lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people is often overshadowed by their New York counterparts. In truth, Los Angeles gave rise to one of the most influential LGBTQ cultures and activist movements.

Drawing upon archival footage and contemporary interviews, filmmaker Gregorio Davila chronicles LA’s unique LGBTQ history. From the first missionary encounters with Native American “two spirits” to cross dressing frontier women in search of their fortunes. From bohemian freedoms of early Hollywood to the explosion of gay life during World War II. From the underground radicalism set off by the 1950’s blacklist to the 1960’s gay liberation movement. From the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and later Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, to the current state of LGBT social justice.

Gregorio Davila is a writer and all-around visual artist; much of his work revolves around people of color, mainly Latinos, who he believes are grossly under and misrepresented in media, especially Queer Latinos. He has two written, produced, edited and directed two short films: NANCY FROM EAST SIDE CLOVER, which played in twelve festivals around the world and won five awards. And JEANNE CORDOVA: BUTCHES, LIES & FEMINISM whichmade its festival debut at Outfest Los Angeles in July 2017, winning the JURY AWARD for BEST SHORT DOCUMENTARY. JEANNE has played in five more festivals around the country so far, snagging two more JURY AWARDS and one AUDIENCE AWARD.

This is a free event, but registration is required.

Upon arrival at Mizell you will be asked to show proof of vaccination and be asked to wear a mask when in the building.
