In an effort to protect the health and safety of grocery and retail drug store workers and customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Palm Springs today issued a supplementary order effective immediately, requiring several important protective measures, which includes the following:
- Limit number of consumers in a store at any given time to 40% of the store’s total occupancy limit.
- For stores with two public entrances, designate one entrance and one exit.
- An employee must be assigned to the entrance of a store, to help mitigate
the amount of customers inside the store at any given time.
- Maintain personnel onsite to enforce social distance measures.
- Companies should allow for a sufficient amount of time overnight to allow for
stores to be properly sanitized and restocked.
- Install plexiglass shields at all points of sale whenever possible.
- Inform employees, in writing, of precautions to be taken when an employee
tests positive for COVID-19, and to the best of its ability, inform affected
employees, without violating HIPAA when a co-worker tests positive.
- Provide non-medical face covering, hand sanitizer and gloves for employees,
at the expense of the employer.
- Allow paid time for employees to wash hands as specified by Cal-OSHA
- Stores must adhere to a policy of not serving anyone not wearing a face
- Placing tape or other markings at least six feet apart in customer line areas,
whether inside or outside the building (including on any sidewalks at the public entrance of the store), with signs directing customers to use the markings to maintain social distance.
In addition, all businesses must clearly post signs outside the store and in the store, to remind people of the following:
- Customers must wear face coverings.
- Adhere to social distancing throughout the store — not just at checkout.
- Adhere to occupancy limit.
- Properly discard personal protective equipment and do not leave in stores or
- Recommended that one household member should shop at a time.
